From September 9th to 11th 2026, representatives of the IBISS Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Team Dr. Danijela Vojnović Milutinović and Dr. Marijana Skorić, together with Dr. Nataša Veličković, STRIMHealth Coordinator, conducted a study visit dedicated to intellectual property (IP) management and the organization of innovation support systems. This visit included Karolinska Institutet Innovation in Solna, Sweden as well as Örebro University in Örebro, Sweden.
The visit to Karolinska Institutet Innovation was hosted by Dr. Patrik Blomquist, Senior Business Advisor and Head of the KI Innovation Lab. The central topic of the visit was Sweden’s distinctive intellectual property framework for academic research and an overview of the Nordic life science ecosystem. The STRIMHealth team learned how Karolinska Institutet Innovation supports researchers in navigating this framework and helps them secure and manage IP rights as they move towards commercialization. The visit also included knowledge transfer through concrete case studies and a discussion with Dr. Volker Lauschke, successful entrepreneur and co-founder and CEO of HepaPredict AB and PersoMedix AB.
The visit to Örebro University (ORU) was hosted by Prof. Dr. Matej Orešič at the School of Medical Sciences. Prof. Orešič is a recognised inventor with 10 patents. He shared his personal experience with IP management and protection. The IBISS team was introduced to the guidelines for IP management at ORU, as well as to the distinct roles of researchers and academia in the development of research-based ideas into viable business ventures. Experiences on the technology transfer pathway in Serbia and Sweden were also exchanged.
The visit gave the STRIMHealth team valuable insight into how a mature academic innovation ecosystem is organized, providing inspiration and practical knowledge that can inform the further building of innovation support and IP management practices within IBISS’s own research environment.
